The sector of jewellery in Tunisia is witnessing a period of turmoil in these days, where workers and traders carried out an 8-day strike and organized a protest in front of the Ministry of Tourism. They asked for law regulation and reformulation in their sector and the abolition of Chapter 34 of the 2005 Law on precious metals and penalties, which stipulates corruption and bribery.
The supervisory authority and the workers in the sector have agreed on having discussions about the formulation of a draft law that regulates the sector. In addition, they have agreed on the dissemination of surveillance throughout the country and the development of control structures by keeping pace with the advanced control techniques on the jewellery. This consensual project is supposed to be carried out by a ministerial council on December 25, 2017. Consequently, workers will resume their work after this latest tension.
