“Info be”, the Argentinian newspaper, revealed that hundreds of thousands of foreign workers, working in the construction of the 2022 World Cup stadiums in Qatar are living under the burden of slavery, including unchecked numbers, who have lost their lives in work accidents.
Several reports of trade unions and human rights organizations have also highlighted that once Doha began implementing its plan to build large stadiums and infrastructure, the testimonies of migrant workers who were victims of human rights violations, mostly from Nepal, began to be heard.
It is known that Qatar has a large number of immigrants and foreign workers with about two million people and they make up about 95% of the population. About 40% of them work in the construction sector in harsh and inhuman conditions, in which workers are deprived of minimum wages and there is no effective control system to ensure compliance with work standards. In addition, workers are deprived of forming trade unions.
Many international trade unions and human rights organizations have submitted statements and complaints to FIFA on violations of workers rights in Qatar, but no measurements have been taken to address them nor clear guarantees of compliance with decent working conditions for construction workers.
