Young female workers in agriculture suffer from harsh working conditions and lack of legal cover, since law prohibits working under the age of 16 years.
According to a study conducted by “Tamkeen” center, young female farmers receive lower wages compared with their older colleagues, despite doing the same work. Moreover, they suffer from lack of occupational health and safety conditions, long hours of work, deprivation from social security and health insurance, and lack of safe means of transport. This reflects the exploitation and abuse of young female workers in agriculture.
Large numbers of young workers in agriculture are forced to work in such circumstances due to their miserable social and financial conditions. The last study conducted by the department of statistics on children’s situation in agriculture in 2008 indicated that” the number of working girls in this sector is 3605, that is 11% of all working children, aged from 12 to 17, which constitute the largest proportion of all children.
