Private newspapers in Mauritania have protested against the distribution centres since December 11 because of the lack of paper in the national printing press, which has made 20 publications, including seven daily newspapers, not available. Whereas, the Arab government newspaper The People and the official French newspaper l’Horizon”continue their publications, according the Syndicate of Journalists announcement.
No official explanation was given regarding the lack of paper or the clarification of its causes, which made the Press Syndicate accuse the authorities of seeking to make the news limited to official newspapers only. Moreover, they believe that there is a link between the non-printing of private newspapers and the suspension of private television stations in late October, after a financial dispute with the government in charge of satellite broadcasting. In fact, they are asking for the immediate resumption of the printing of private newspapers and the cessation of restrictions on freedom of expression and democracy in the country.
It is noteworthy that the national printing press apologized to newspaper editors for printing their newspapers because of its inability to provide papers, stressing that there is a financial crisis that delayed the salaries of the workers of the institution during the past months. .
