In a strange move, Emirates Airways prevented Tunisian women from traveling on their flight to Dubai International Airport via the Emirates Airlines flight, on Friday, without giving a reason. Every Tunisian woman, of whatever age, was prevented from boarding the plane at Tunis-Carthage airport, even if accompanied by her husband, whether in the direction to the UAE or on a transit journey, except for Tunisian women living in the United Arab Emirates.
This position aroused anger, resentment and indignation in the Tunisian street and in the social networking spaces, which considered that this decision as a racist crime, a violation of the status and dignity of Tunisian women and a violation of the prestige and sovereignty of the Tunisian state. They even considered that the UAE is still spiteful of the Tunisian revolution and the democratic experience of the country, while the Emiratis suffer a dictatorship that does not respect women or democracy and exploit foreign workers in in an obscene way.
Many political and civil figures demanded that the Tunisian state has to take a firm stance towards the UAE, especially that it violated international laws and conventions and should officially apologize for its irresponsible behaviour. They criticized the reaction of the Tunisian authorities, which only called on the UAE ambassador to Tunisia, who clarified that it is a circumstantial and for security matters …
It is worth mention that one the United Arab Emirates’ princes was awarded as the most handsome and attractive man in the Arab world provoked a wave of irony on theFacebook Tunisianpages of one day before the decision.
