Attempts to control trade union organizations in Mauritania

The General Confederation of Mauritanian Workers has warned employers and trade union organizations against attempts or what they called “the militarization of trade union organizations and the endeavours to control them,” calling on workers to confront them and defend the democratic gains of the country.

The Confederation noted that the Prime Ministers supervision of the inauguration of the recent employers union conference, with the presence of Government officials foretells the danger of the government‘s intervention to control the employers organization. Moreover, the Confederation called in its statement for respecting the international labour standards, which have been set forth in the conventions and have been ratified by the country since 1961. In addition, they called for adopting a full neutrality policy towards the other social partners and stop interfering in the internal affairs of the National Union of Mauritanian Employers.
