Are doctors’ protests sign of a social explosion in Algeria?

We have published in a precedent newsletter the painful events witnessed by “Mustafa Pasha” hospital, during which dozens of people were injured with varying degrees of danger and the arrest of a number of trade unionists following security forces attacks on them, preventing them from expressing their voices and protesting against the non-adherence of the Ministry of Health to its pledges.

According to observers, these protests are one of the indicators of the deterioration of the economic situation and social unrest in several sectors in Algeria, in the light of the austerity plans adopted by the government to cope with the burdens of the economic crisis. Thus, making the current year the most difficult and harsh years in the country as a result of the expected deterioration in the purchasing power and rise in inflation indices. Moreover, it is due to the erosion of the foreign currency balance on the value of the local currency and the rise in prices of some consumer goods and services in a remarkable way that will accumulate troubles for the fragile social groups, which may lead to social explosion at any moment.

It was reported that the cities of “Bejaia” and “Bouira “witnessed a protest of private car owners and some citizens, who closed some of the urban roads linking between governorates, after that the government approved the increase in prices of some consumer goods, especially fuel, which was reflected in other services related to public transportation and agricultural activity.
