The British report issued by “the Middle East Eye” website revealed that migrant women inQatar face many difficulties with their harsh living conditions, during their work for low wages and far from their children because of the strict labour laws.
The reported highlighted that Qatar, like any other Gulf country, is heavily dependent on foreign workers, which account for at least 90 of the countrys population, which is about 2.1 million people. They come mostly from Asia and Africa, and are mainly employed in the construction sector or as housekeepers.
The report also explained that migrant workers face significant challenges to work in Qatar. For example, at least two-thirds of Nepalese workers are payingexpensive and illegalemployment fees, according to asurvey by Amnesty International in 2017. The working conditions there are associated with exploitation, abuse and delay payment or even the non-payment of wages. In addition to the illegal confiscation of workers passports, as migrant workers are required to earn more than $ 1,920 per month to obtain visas for their family members.
Moreover, migrant workers continue to be subject to the exigent exit permit, the mainstay of the controversial sponsorship system that binds workers to one employer, despite the reforms in this system that has covered some levels, but has not introduced reforms to the operating system.
