Five Mauritanian trade union confederations condemned the rise in prices in Mauritania over the past year and denounced the governments policy of repression.
The leaders of the labour confederations including : the General Confederation of Mauritanian Workers (CGTM), the Free Confederation of Mauritanian Workers (CLTM), the National Confederation of Mauritanian Workers (CNTM), the General Union of Mauritanian Professional Trade Unions (UGSPM) and the Mauritanian Workers Union (CMT), presented in a press conferencethe several negative repercussions of the economic crisis on citizens, which was reflected in the sudden rise in prices, mainly the prices of basic materials.
The unions considered that the reasons behind this crisis are the weak policies taken by the government and the recentdangerous measures taken regarding the raising of the customs tax on imported materials and the elimination of some public institutions, which led to a huge rise in prices and an unprecedented deterioration in the purchasing power of citizens, especially for workers who already suffered from low wages.
The trade union confederations stressed their rejection of the policy of the elimination of public institutions and called on the government to resume negotiations in a serious and immediate manner. They also condemned the oppressive approach adopted by the government with the claimants which resulted in the sacrifice of university students who were the victims during their peaceful protests to ask for their legitimate rights.
