Ports workers to embark on an open-ended hunger strike

JORDAN— Ports workers on Sunday embarked on an open-ended hunger strike after five days of protest against the Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) Company for not appointing a number of their colleagues after being laid off by Louloa company.

Mohammad Matlyeh, Secretary General of the Ports Union Workers stressed that this hunger strike is the start for several steps that would be adopted by the workers, if the ACT insisted on its decision.

Workers, he added might protest in front of the Parliament and the Prime Ministry until all their demands are responded to.

The ACT has offered appointing around 75 workers out of 102 with JD190 as a monthly salary, down from JD500. The company also offered them to work based on request.

Meanwhile, Aqaba Development Corporation, the central development body for Aqaba authority stressed that the ACT is giving the priority to the appointment of the Louloa workers and it will work to ensure workers’ rights within the laws.
