EGYPT— Thousands of doctors in Egypt staged a protest against police abuses after accusations that two doctors were beaten up by policemen in Matariya hospital in Cairo.
The move came in response to an assault on two doctors on January 28. According to news reports, the incident took place after one of the doctors described the cut on the officer’s forehead as simple and said it didn’t require stitches.
The policeman then attacked the doctors, before a colleague joined him, pulled out a gun and began to threaten the hospital staff.
The two policemen were later joined by more officers from a nearby police station. They dragged the two doctors into a bus to take them to a police station. On the way to the vehicle, one policeman stomped on a doctor’s head with his boots.
The general prosecutor has ordered an investigation into the incident and on Wednesday, 13 days after the assault, nine policemen were questioned and two were detained. All were released on Thursday pending further investigation
On Saturday, 13 human rights organizations issued a statement, calling on the general prosecutor to accelerate the process of investigating the incident.
They also called for a mechanism to ensure protecting eye witnesses.
