Jordan— A recent study showed that 360 collective agreements were signed between trade unions and corporates’ management over the past five years.
According to the study entitled “Collective Agreements and Labor Protests in Jordan” 55.3 per cent (199) of these agreements were signed by three trade unions out of six.
The study conducted by the Economic and Social Council, collective agreements have become one of the important tools that organize the relation between workers and employers.
It added that labor laws usually focus on the basic rights of workers, especially the individual rights, while collective agreements cover issues that are not included in laws. In addition, collective agreements are flexible and can be amended within short time.
The study indicated that 90 per cent of the agreements signed in the period in question tackled issues related to increase of wages and incentives.
However, as for the collective agreements signed after workers’ protest, their number stood at 15, according to the same study.
It recommended amending the labor law in Jordan to include collective agreements, and to issue a law that regulates trade unions for workers in the public sector.
