Contractual teachers take to the streets, reject use of force to disburse them

ALGERIA— More than 1,000 contractual teachers in Algeria took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the use of force against their colleagues during their “peaceful” protest last week.

Security forces, last week, used force against protesting teachers in the capital, and detained 40 teachers.

According to the National Commission for Contractual Teachers, hundreds of police personnel prevented the teachers’ protest from taking place in front of the presidency headquarter and detained dozens of them.

Syndicat National Autonome des Personnels de lAdministration Publique (SNAPAP) issued a statement one day before the march, listing their demands and stressing their rejection of employment contracts without rights.

Protests started when minister of education rejected to integrate contractual teachers noting that the law does not allow the integration of this category- contractual teachers- within the system.
