MAURITANIA— Police used sticks and tears gas to disperse a sit-in held by Nouakchott porters, where they also arrested some of the protesting workers.
Worker at Nouakchott port were protesting against a decision to transfer containers to a warehouse outside the port to unload them by foreign workers and for “less payment”, which reflected negatively on the employment of Mauritanians.
The Arab Trade Union Confederation (ATUC) condemns using force against protesting Mauritanians by the police, demands the release of those arrested and calls on the international community to support porters’ demands.
ATUC also expresses its support to the legitimate demands of the workers, and calls on the Mauritanian government to cancel the container system and improves work conditions.
