Moroccan Unions to hold march for workers’ rights

MOROCCO— Three leading labor unions in Morocco have announced they will hold a march in Casablanca on November 29 to defend the social and economic conditions of the working class.

The Moroccan Labor Union (Union Marocaine de travail), the Democratic Confederation for Labor (Confédération démocratique du travail) and the Democratic Federation for Labor (Fédération démocratique du travail) made the announcement in a joint statement issued on Friday saying it would be a protest march to defend purchasing power, dignity, liberty and social equality.

In their statement, the three unions called on the government and employers to increase wages, reduce income tax and increase scale of salaries subject to taxes, in addition to respect freedom of association and cancel article 288 of the Moroccan Penal Code. They also called on the government to to fulfill its responsibilities under an agreement made on April 26, 2011, to improve civil servants’ salaries and raise the minimum wage and minimum pension.
