Laboratory technicians demand allowance

 

 

JORDAN— Medical lab technicians in Jordan called for including their occupation within hazardous occupations category, to be entitled for hazardous work conditions allowance.

A number of senior academic consultants agreed on hazardous work conditions in this sector, where lab technicians deal on a daily basis with a huge number of patients’ blood samples, most of which include pathogenic bacteria and infectious.

They noted that various lab disciplines share the risk element while dealing with patients, whether during drawing, receiving or analysis of blood samples, and subsequent processes in dealing with lethal laboratories and medical waste.

Lab technicians also criticized health insurance system that does not tackle this issue, calling for its amendment.

Salwa Amarin, president of medical labs owners’ trade union said that trade union and Jordan Society for Medical Laboratory Sciences (JSMLS) are seeking to include profession of medical lab technicians within hazardous occupations, by sending letters to competent authorities and stakeholders regarding this issue.
