Seafarers strike in Kuwait delay 55 ships

KUWAIT— The departure of four ships was delayed on Thursday because of the seafarers strike that lasted for two hours.

Thursday strike led to raising number of delayed ships in Shuwaikh and Shabieh ports to 55.

Captain Abdullah Sarhid, President of Kuwait Ports Foundation Workers’ Union said this is a partial strike to show that “we are serious” about the workers’ demands.

If workers are to embark on a complete strike, only ships with shipments essential for consumers will be allowed entry, according to Sarhid.

Mohammad Arada, President of the Municipality Union said measures will be escalated if seafarers’ demands are not met. These demands include paying them danger pay and sailing allowance.
