Jordan – the General Union of Port Workers announced that they will strike on 25th of this month and they will neither go to the Board of Conciliation nor to the labor court, as the Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) company want because the demands was signed within agreements between the union and the company. Mohammad Matilah, the union’s spokesperson, asked the company to stop pressuring and threatening the workers.
Workers demanded the company to respect the agreements signed between the union and companys management concerning working hours during the month of Ramadan, which amounts to 6 hours, and any additional hours should be considered over time, companys management says that working hours must be eight hours for each shift and that the time of iftar or suhoor and time of prayer within the shift is not paid.
The company announced in a statement yesterday that they received a notice of the strike from the General Union of port workers and customs, and that the debate over the issue will be transferred to the Ministry of Labour to initiate settlement procedures
