In an apparent exploitation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the governor of Sicily issued a decree ordering the collective expulsion of asylum seekers from the island.
In a racist speech, the ruler of Sicily wrote on Facebook: “Sicily cannot be invaded, while the European Union turns a blind eye and the government does not take action”.
The decree, in effect until September 10, stipulates that all migrant reception centers on the island must be evacuated and residents must be transferred to other places within Italy or Europe. It also stipulated that all incoming migrants arriving by sea were banned from entering.
It is noteworthy that the governor of Sicily belongs to the far-right League party led by the opposition leader, and the former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who had previously appeared before the judiciary at the request of the Italian Senate after recording violations against migrants under his direct orders.
