Multiple news agencies quoted Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko who said on Saturday that he intends to close down factories whose workers participated in protests against the election results in a new attempt to rein in the marches that swept the country’s streets.
Lukashenko suggested expelling workers participating in those protests in a speech at the border with Poland, in which he said: “If there is a factory that is not working, let us close it starting Monday, let us stop it from working, people will calm down and we will decide who we will call them after to work.”
It is noteworthy that Belarus is witnessing an unprecedented wave of protests against the election results, which culminated in the victory of Lukashenko for a new term, noting that he has ruled for a continuous 26 years. The protesters are making accusations of fraudulent elections and rigging the votes.
