Egypt: Violations in Maridive Shipping and Petroleum, 21 Workers Dismissed

The Egyptian Trade Union and Workers Services House said that the management of Maridive Maritime and Petroleum Services in Alexandria has dismissed 21 workers from its workers without giving reasons.

Last Thursday, the human resources employees assigned the CEO of the company to call the workers and inform them that the management decided to terminate their service and asked them to sign resignations as well as an agreement on their financial dues that will be disbursed after submitting the required resignations.

The workers were surprised that the management wanted the workers to sign the resignations first before determining the value of their financial dues, and that the administration had decided to grant them their financial dues in indefinite installments and gave them half a month for the first five years, in addition to a month for each year of service from the remaining period for each worker, which he refused.

The workers considered it a procrastination from the administration part and an evasion from the payment of workers’ dues, which prompted them to issue 21 records of proof of violation, as well as to submit a complaint to the Smouha Labor Office against the company’s management.

According to the workers, the company had argued that it resorted to this measure to stop work and the lack of resources for the company to enable it to pay wages and monthly entitlements to its employees.

While the workers explained that the management has been asking workers to be patient for more than seven years, without demanding a payment increase. Even at a time when the company’s profits have doubled since the pound float and the dollar price has nearly tripled, the workers did not receive any financial increases mentioned, and the administration kept the workers’ expense at the price of the old dollar exchange rate in paying salaries.

The company’s employees confirmed that the number of workers who have been informed of their dismissal and termination is a first batch only. They noted that other groups of workers will follow during the upcoming period, and that the management’s policy is to reduce the number of workers whose wages average between five to six thousand pounds among workers on the company’s boats that serve as oil platforms, tow rigs, and the delivery of equipment and supplies. On the other hand, the rent for only one boat the company rents to oil companies is approximately ten thousand dollars per month.
