The UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization announced the possibility of increasing the working hours today in the private sector institutions for one hour per day without pay, provided that the weekly working hours do not exceed 48 hours.
The ministry stressed the necessity of granting workers a compulsory rest of no less than an hour after every 5 extra work hours, which raises several questions about the timing of the beginning and end of work.
The ministry added that the total daily working hours in the various work bodies of the private sector amount to eight working hours, not exceeding 48 hours per week, explaining that the daily working hours decrease by two hours during the month of Ramadan every year, to become six hours.
In response to a question about the maximum additional working hours in the establishments, the Ministry stressed that it is not permissible to increase the working hours to two additional hours per day, provided that the wage is equal to the basic wage corresponding to the normal working hours, with an increase of no less than 25% of the wage.
The Ministry also responded to another question regarding the duration of rest periods during working hours, saying that: “The daily rest period during working hours is at least one hour, so that the second party does not work five continuous hours without a rest period.”
The Ministry confirmed as well that the daily rest periods are not considered among working hours.
