Bahrain: Fear and worries about the increase in the value added tax

The Secretary-General of the General Union of Bahrain Trade Unions, “Hassan Al-Hilwaji”stressed that the union will work with civil society and specialists to examine the file of VAT promotion in depth and take a set of measures to counter the effects of this tax on the working class and the low-income.

He pointed out that the General Union is taking steps that commensurate with the seriousness of this subject for the workers and the middle class, which is under pressure drifting to the lower class. Taking into considering that this class is the balance of stability of societies, so that its exposure to marginalization is a burden on social, political and economicsecurity.

The Secretary-General stressed that there was an urgent need to review the pattern of economic production in the region, provided that such a review should not one-sided, but rather a social partnership with social dialogue among social partners. Pointing out that what is happening now about the tax report is conducted in isolation from social dialogue. He expressed his surprise at ignoring the principle and the importance of national partnership in decision-making, calling for broadening the freedom of opinion and expression and expand the area of participation in decision-making.
