In celebration of World Humanitarian Work Day, the official website of the United Nations published a text that stated the following:
Self-saving support during a time of pandemic
On World Humanitarian Work Day, celebrated on August 19 each year, the world remembers with reverence the humanitarian workers who have been killed or injured in the course of their work. We pay tribute to all the relief and health workers who continue to support and protect the people most in need despite all the challenges and difficulties.
This year, World Humanitarian Day comes as global efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic have been continuing over the past few months. Aid workers are overcoming unprecedented obstacles and challenges in reaching people in 54 countries and helping them during humanitarian crises, as well as an additional nine countries that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought into need.
The date August 19 has been designated as World Humanitarian Work Day in memory of those who perished in the attack that occurred on August 19, 2003 at the Canal Hotel in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, which resulted in 22 people, including the chief humanitarian affairs officer in Iraq, Sergio Vieira De Mello.
In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly formalized this anniversary by officially proclaiming International Humanitarian Day.
A global campaign celebrating humanitarian workers, and a gratitude message for those who solely stood to help others
On August 19 of this year, our celebration of World Humanitarian Work Day will be the eleventh annual celebration of this occasion, in which we celebrate the true heroes who stood up to help others in all parts of the world under the most difficult circumstances.
The campaign focuses on what drives humanitarian workers to continue their work of self-preservation and protection despite the conflict, insecurity, difficulty in accessing people in need and the risks they face relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, the COVID-19 pandemic has been the biggest challenge facing humanitarian operations worldwide. Difficulty reaching people, as well as restrictions imposed by governments, have made local communities, civil society organizations, and local NGOs at the forefront of responding to this pandemic.
Therefore, the campaign provides inspiring personal stories of humanitarian workers who work restlessly to provide treatment for the COVID-19 pandemic and putting efforts into its prevention.
Humanitarian workers also operate to provide food for vulnerable people in need, as well as safe places for women and girls during the period of economic closure; by providing care services concerning childbirth; Locust control; and management of refugee camps in light of this pandemic.
