Tunisia / Follow-up: Italy Vows to Expel Illegal Migrants

Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said on Monday as part of his visit to Tunisia that his country will not allow illegal migrants to remain on its soil.

In a statement after the Italian-European delegation met with Tunisian President Kais Saied, Di Maio expressed “Italy’s readiness to provide all necessary assistance to Tunisia, and to provide youth programs and other means of support”, according to a statement published by the Tunisian presidency.

Di Maio added that: “There is no room for those who arrive to Italy illegally”, noting “the continuation of negotiations between the Tunisian and Italian sides to find formulas for bilateral cooperation”.

For his part, the Tunisian president emphasized, “the necessity of adopting a comprehensive and consensual approach in the field of migration that focuses mainly on combating poverty and unemployment by supporting development efforts in the countries of origin and encouraging regular migration.”

He also noted that: “security solutions alone are not sufficient to eliminate irregular migration”.

The number of migrants arriving to Italy has increased by nearly 150 % over the past 12 months, most of them were from Tunisia, according to a statement by the Italian Interior Minister on Saturday.
